We live in a world where toxins are everywhere—from pesticides in our food to chemicals in our water, air, and household products. Over time, these toxins can accumulate in the body, contributing to a wide range of health issues: fatigue, brain fog, hormone imbalances, mood swings, stubborn weight, and even chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, autoimmune conditions, heart disease, and dementia.

That’s why detoxification is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity.

But not all detox programs are safe or effective. Some are aggressive and may leave the body more depleted than supported. What’s needed is a gentle, long-term approach that works with the body, not against it. One that nourishes, rebuilds, and eliminates at a pace your body can handle.

The Foundation: Nutritional Balancing Science

A profoundly effective and safe method of detoxification is known as Nutritional Balancing, a comprehensive healing system originally developed by Dr. Paul Eck and further advanced by Dr. Susan Cachay. This system uses hair mineral analysis testing to assess mineral imbalances and heavy metal toxicity, offering a personalized, science-based roadmap to healing.

This method has been tried and tested for decades and is known to promote deep cellular healing, adrenal restoration, detoxification, and re-mineralization of the body—safely and naturally.

If you don’t currently have access to a Nutritional Balancing practitioner or hair analysis testing, don’t worry. There’s still a lot you can do to begin the process at home.

My 6-Prong Gentle Detox Protocol

This is a practical and gentle way to begin detoxing—especially if you’re new to it. You don’t need fancy tools or expensive supplements. Just a commitment to slowing down, nourishing your body, and creating sustainable habits.

1. Eat Cooked Vegetables Daily

Aim for a wide variety of cooked vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables (2-3 cups per day). The best vegetables are all onions, shallots, leaks, green onions or scallions, carrots, green beans, daikon radish, red cabbage, brocollini, and a small amount of celery, garlic, ginger, and horse radish.

Pro Tip: Make it easy with slow cooker stews, soups, and batch cooking. Your future self will thank you!

2. Exercise Outside in the Sunlight

Daily movement outdoors supports circulation, detox through the lymphatic system, and boosts your vitamin D levels. Even a 20-minute walk can make a difference.

3. Grounding (Earthing) Every Day

Walking barefoot on natural surfaces (grass, soil, sand) helps reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, and restore electrical balance in the body. Its a hugely overlooked detox tool!

4. Hydrate with Clean Water

Drink plenty of carbon-filtered water or use a high-quality filtration system to avoid chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical residues.

5. Sweating: Saunas or Detox Baths

Use a Finnish or infrared sauna 2–3 times a week to support the elimination of toxins through the skin. Alternatively, you can take Epsom salt or bentonite clay baths for similar benefits. A full post on the longevity promoting benefits of sauna will be coming your way soon.

6. Support with Zeolite and Coffee Enemas

  • Zeolite Powder: A natural mineral that binds to heavy metals and toxins in the gut. Ensure it’s a clean, medical-grade source.
👉 Read about zeolite safety and usage
  • Coffee Enemas: These can stimulate bile flow and enhance liver detox. Best used under guidance, especially if you’re new to them. They sound quite scary, and just a little gross, but trust me, they do wonders for our liver health. I will do an entire blog post just on the wonders of the coffee enema. Now, should you wish to google the, you will be told they are not effective, and not safe even. But as a gut health specialist and someone who is deeply invested in supplying good free health information, I can tell you that you will not regret trying it. Before you do though, do some research of your own, I can recommend the following podcasts: here and ensure you have all the right tools and information, as well as organic freshly roasted and ground coffee at hand.

Don’t Forget the Mental and Emotional Detox

Physical detox is only half the picture. It’s equally important to release stored emotions, chronic stress, and mental clutter. Practices like:

  • Kinesiology
  • Breathwork
  • Journaling
  • Therapy or emotional release techniques
  • Mindfulness or meditation

…can support your nervous system and inner peace, creating space for healing on all levels.

Set Yourself Up for Success

Here’s how to begin, even without lab testing:

  • Create a simple, nourishing meal plan with plenty of vegetables (think one-pot meals, slow cooker recipes). I will be sharing some in the next few weeks.
  • Remove toxic body and household products—switch to natural skincare, detergents, and cleaning supplies.
  • Pay attention to water quality, both for drinking and bathing.
  • Make time for sleep, movement, grounding, and sweating—daily if possible.
  • Design a clear and simple daily routine that doesn’t overwhelm you.

This isn’t a quick fix—it’s a lifelong shift toward vibrant health. Go slow, be kind to your body, and remember: detoxing is a journey, not a sprint.

What about protein?

Begin each meal with a small portion of one or perhaps two protein foods. Recommended proteins are sardines, chicken, turkey, lamb, and a little natural or organic beef, sesame tahini, goat cheese or goat yogurt. Do not overcook meats. Eggs are also a good choice of protein.

In addition, you can enjoy 2 tablespoons of roasted sesame tahini, and one teaspoon daily of nutritional yeast daily. You can sprinkle/ drizzle these on vegetables or other foods.

AVOID all pork products, all shellfish, all fish except sardines, most processed meats such as salami, bologna, and hot dog sausages.
